In 2004 Lee completed the first collaboratively written PhD to be undertaken within a UK HE institution. A practice as research project, it was jointly authored with his research partner Joanne 'Bob' Whalley. The thesis was a practical exploration and qualification of Marc Augé's 'non-place', and the practical element of which included the renewal of Whalley & Miller's wedding vows in a motorways service station on the M6 motorway.
